I. ROLL CALL AND INTRODUCTIONS:

The meeting was called to order at 3:05 PM.   Roll call established a quorum.

II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

The minutes from the April meeting were reviewed and accepted except for 1 typo.

III. OLD BUSINESS:

Stanfield Videos - 2 copies of the James Stanfield tapes, Be Cool, series were received.  Each set consists of 4 boxed sets of about 4 VHS tapes each.  Coping with teasing, Coping with anger, coping with criticism and coping with bullying.  A teacher manual is included with each package of tapes.  The FCC is donating these tapes to the Volusia and Flagler libraries to be used in their disabilities section of the library.

They will be made available to families of persons with disabilities.  Teachers in the school system may want to borrow them as well.  They are excellent training aides for folks with DD.  They use professional actors in humorous situations in order to make the point.

Kelly Colonna will work to include them in the Volusia County library and Irene Gallo will work with the Flagler County library.  Phil will get them to Irene.  They will be marked to note that they were donated by the Area 12 Family Care Council.

This will be noted in our next newsletter.

Info on the James Stanfield company can be obtained at the following web site.  http://www.stanfield.com/

Newspaper Ad  - covered at the last meeting.  We need to figure out how to get our meeting notices in the paper

Next Mailing – Phil Pearson is preparing another issue of the newsletter.  Folks present were asked to read it and email comments.  Any ideas, of course, are welcome.

We will have info about legislation,  obtaining services from voc rehab,  info about our area legislators and, of  course, a pitch for the family care council.

Return Address stamp – received.  Phil has it.  It will be used to put return addresses on our next newsletter.

Palm Coast Staples as a supplier -  Sandra thought that this was done but will check and send Phil email confirming.  This is critical to the FCC for providing mailing support to APD for our newsletters because this location is close to the volunteers that will be doing the folding work (Christina Pinto)

Meeting Changes  - The next 2 meetings will be at our usual location in Daytona Beach.  The August meeting will be at the ARC in Deland from 7 – 9 pm.

 IV.  New Business

Agency Update  - The APD website has a link to FAQ on the budget.  Also APD is looking at quality improvements and recouping of improperly used funds by providers.

Duvall homes as sent eviction notices to 27 folks.  APD is actively working to identify proper placements for these folks.  This is listed under PRESBYTERIAN SPEC SVCS
THE DUVALL PRESBYTERIAN HOME.  The person to contact is Chris Hill.  Parents are advised to call the Advocacy Center at 1-800-342-0823 for advise about how to proceed.  The FCC may write a letter.

Training is available to parents and families as well as to providers.  Check the Area 12 APD page for details.  It was decided that Sandra Mills will provide a short, 30 minute, training at the August meeting in Deland.  She will go over the power-point put together by the Area 12 quality council on how to best navigate the system.

There is a training next Wednesday, 10 – 12 AM at APD where folks can ask the area agency anything.

There was a suggestion by Kelly to provide training on how to do an IEP.

Legislative Review – the results of this year’s legislature were reviewed.  New 4 tier system and some cut-backs.  Hopefully this will result in less waste and allow the system to start addressing the waiting list.  See the upcoming newsletter for more details.

Plan For Legislators – There was a request for a sample letter to the Governor so that folks that are not familiar with the problems could write a letter of support.  Phil will attempt this.

Discussion about how to start working with legislators.  Suggestion was to contact Rolley Clapp for advise.  Phil will follow up.

All present were asked to check on legislative town hall meeting schedules.

Duval Homes Evictions – see above

Training – see above

V.  Open discussion – Ms. Gilbreath indicated that they were having some success obtaining help find a job from Voc Rehab.

The waiting list is now over 16,000.

VI. ADJOURN:

With no further business to come before the Council the meeting adjourned at 4:10 PM.

Thanks to Tom Brander for taking notes.
