FAMILY CARE COUNCIL – AREA 12

Family Support Plan

2010

 I.  Mission –

 To advocate for & assist all persons with developmental disabilities the best way that we can, utilizing the funds made available to us as productively as possible.

 II.  Philosophy/Values/Principles 

  • Every person, disabled or not, has something to contribute to his or her community – from FCC orientation manual
  • Every person with a developmental disability should have access to necessary services. – from FCC orientation manual
  • Self determination will be implemented wherever possible
  • All peoples will be treated with respect and fairness
  • Open and honest communications between individuals and organizations is essential

 III.  2009 Goals:

 1.               To increase awareness of Developmental Disabilities to the general population in order to educate and promote a better understanding and genuine acceptance within our community

o      Maintain our FCC12 web site

o       Work with the County libraries to establish and support a DD resource center.

2.               Influence legislation and funding pertinent to persons with developmental disabilities

o      Understand issues important to the developmentally disabled

o      Understand our government structure (local and state) and publish it on the FCC12 website

o      Write letters and emails to our Governor, Congressmen and Senators

o      Meet and Greet our representatives

o      Testify before the legislature

o      Look for money to fund a lobbyist

3.               Understand and influence APD policies and procedures regarding persons with developmental disabilities

o      Understand the appropriate laws governing APD

o      Become educated on how APD works and sets their policies

o      Write position papers on how the developmentally disabled and their families should be treated

o      Work with APD to develop a caregiver “end of life” plan.

o      Understand supports needed and resources available for a variety of disabilities including the hearing & visually impaired.

4.               To advocate for, educate and help empower individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their Families to the best of their ability

o      by collecting and supplying pertinent information, important contacts, editorials, answers to common questions, etc. and putting them in an easy and accessible form.

o      Maintaining our FCC12 website

o      Develop training for families

5.               Be effective representatives to the FCCF

o      Attend periodic meeting

o      Read and give feedback on info sent out by FCCF

6.               Provide financial help to families that have members that are developmentally disabled.

o      Raise money

o      Place an Ad in the newspaper
